Vascular Assessment
Vascular assessment Assessment of the quality of blood supply to the feet (Includes check for Atrial fibrillation).
Why have a vascular assessment?
Around 20% of people aged over 60 years have some degree of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). It is caused by fatty deposits accumulating and narrowing the arteries.
If you smoke, have diabetes or heart disease you are at increased risk. PAD can lead to ulcers, infections and gangrene/amputation.
Process
The diagnosis and extent of disease is confirmed by a full, non-invasive assessment, which includes:
Assessment of skin quality
Palpation of pulses
Doppler waveform
Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI) assessment at rest
Checking for atrial fibrillation or irregular heart rhythm using a special device on the fingertips
